Year 6 Money Management Workshop
In June 2011, Barclays Bank ran a money management workshop for Year 6. They started by describing different jobs within a bank, and the skills and qualities required to be a banker.
The first activity for the children involved listing different uses of money i.e. saving, buying food, donating to charity, paying bills.
They then had to work out the profit and loss on certain items that had been sold. Followed by working out if there was an overall loss or profit, or whether they broke even.
There were lots of opportunities to ask questions and the children were introduced to new vocabulary such as overdraft and income.
Here are some of the views of the pupils:
“I enjoyed doing Maths but with money! I liked working out profits, but I didn’t like it when we made a loss!”
“I learnt about different jobs in a bank. I found out what skills you need to be banker and how much you earn. Some children said that they would like to work in a bank when they are older!”
“I learnt lots of new things for example the difference between debit and credit.”
