Learning
Autumn Learning:
The Year 1 children have had a fantastic term learning about ‘Alien’s Love Underpants.’ The children have had fun in English writing stories using the texts ‘Alien’s Love Underpants’, ‘Peace at Last’ and ‘Whatever Next’. The children have also been writing labels and captions, and took part in an alien treasure hunt at the start of term! In Maths, the children learnt about place value, looked at counting sequences, represented numbers using Numicon, and have been introduced to some mathematic symbols such as + and =. Plus we learnt about odd and even numbers as well. In our other subjects we have been learning about throwing and catching and Autumn dance. In RE this term the children have been learning about ‘What does it mean to belong to a faith community’ where they spent some time learning about what it means to be a Christian and a Muslim living in Britain today. In Humanities, the children have enjoyed looking at the geography and history of Beacon Rise. In DT, the children have been creating playground equipment using everyday materials. It has been a very busy term but the children have worked incredibly hard and we are very proud of them. We hope that you all have a well-deserved rest during the half term break and we look forward to seeing you in term 2.
Year 1 have had an amazing Term 2 overall – we have been super busy! Not only did we have all things Christmassy with our fantastic Christmas nativities, but we have also been completing some work on seasonal changes and signs of Autumn. We have been on scientific walks, finding evidence of Autumn and even created our own weather station to describe the weather each day. We learnt about the artist Andy Goldsworthy, who is inspired by nature around him. We created our own Art based on leaf lines that we’d collected from outside. In Maths, we have been learning about measuring and experimenting with different objects to find our which are heavier and lighter. We also had lots of fun dress up event days – including an Ups and Downs obstacle course, and Children in Need. To talk more Christmas, we have made some festive Christmas cards using our painting skills, have enjoyed writing letters to Father Christmas (as we know our teachers are good friends of his…), and learning about different types of poems. We even wrote our own acrostic poems about Winter!
Spring Learning:
Ahoy mateys! Year 1’s learning this term has been so much fun! We’ve had lots of pirate themed activities – exploring materials to help save a pirate ship in Science, designing and making a flag in DT, learning all about sea shanties and even making our own! We were also lucky enough to meet a real life pirate as part of our History learning…Anne Bonny, who told us all about being a female pirate. In Maths, we’ve been learning lots about place value and shapes, and celebrated Number Day as set up by the NSPCC. We got to come in in number based costumes and complete lots of maths challenges through the day. In English, we’ve read the Pirate Cruncher, a scary tale about how pirates nearly get crunched up – oh no! We also talked about lists, and learnt how to list what we would take with us on our very own pirate adventures. What a fabulous term, we can’t wait to see what’s coming next in Term 4.
Year 1 have had an absolute blast this term with our Enchanted Forest topic! We have been looking at fairy tales in English lessons, even having our own chance to write Jack and the Beanstalk for ourselves. We have been going over multiplication and division in Maths. We have had such fun in Science this term particularly, because we got to learn about what plants need and grow our own broad beans! We have been learning about George Seurat and pointillism in Art, and got a chance to create our final project. We are looking forward to our Safari topic next term.
