Autumn Learning: 

Download: 2024-25 Year 6 – Term 1 – Amazing Americas

Year 6 have made a fantastic start to the year! At the beginning of the term, we went to the Life Skills Centre where we explored difficult scenarios that we can encounter outside of school and learnt how to deal with these. In English, we have been reading the book ‘Holes’ and have created our own fictional narratives based on this. In art, we have explored totem poles and now understand what they represent and how they are made. Following this, we made our own clay totem poles and used scoring and hatching to create animal faces that represented things like strength, courage and wisdom. Further flexing our creative muscles, we dedicated two days to the creative arts. Working with Year 5, we created a performance that involved flash mobs, soundscapes, poetry, origami and singing in a round – what an incredible experience!

Year 6 have had an exciting and productive second term! In English, we explored The Phone Booth in Mr Hirota’s Garden. Inspired by the story and the 2011 Otsuchi disaster, the children wrote powerful flashbacks capturing the moment the tsunami struck, as well as detailed newspaper reports recounting the tragic events. In DT, we put our engineering skills to the test by designing and building earthquake-proof structures, thinking carefully about bracing and stability. In maths, we explored fractions and decimals, developing our confidence through problem-solving challenges. One of the highlights of the term was our Christmas carol performance. The children worked incredibly hard to learn and perfect their songs, practicing with enthusiasm and dedication. Their effort and teamwork shone through as they delivered a truly wonderful performance! It has been a term full of creativity, resilience and lots of Christmas cheer! Well done, Year 6! 

Spring Learning: 

Download: 2024-25 Year 6 – Term 3 – Survival of the Fittest

Year 6 have had a creative and productive third term! In music, the children experimented with composition techniques and used graphic scores to convey emotions in film music. This led them to perform a sequence of musical ideas to capture different moods, inspired by the soundtrack of Wallace and Gromit. In art, they explored watercolours to paint scenes influenced by the Pre-Raphaelite Sisterhood. In geography, they examined the tropics and Brazil, creating engaging podcasts to share their discoveries. In English, they delved into Darwin’s Dragons, rewriting Chapter 2 and designing survival guides and instructions to help Syms tackle the difficulties of the Galapagos Islands. In PE, they concentrated on hockey, refining their dribbling, passing and teamwork through dynamic drills and competitive match play. This term has been packed with creativity, learning and fun!

Protests and equal rights have formed the basis of learning in Year 6 this term. From Black Lives Matter to Greta Thunberg, children have been discussing and debating the issues of our time. Good communication and listening skills have been key to understanding different opinions and attitudes towards the same topic.

In computing, pupils have become games designers and have used variables within a programming algorithm to generate different outcomes. As with the previous unit, lots of children continued this learning at home and began creating their own more advanced versions at home.

PE has focused on protest dances and understanding how we interpret music through dance; children used the song ‘Talkin’ Bout A Revolution’ by Tracy Chapman to inspire their dances. Outdoor sessions saw children learning about rugby; lots of children have been able to lead elements of lessons and have displayed some great skills to their peers.

Summer Learning: 

Download: 2024-25 Year 6 Term 5 – Blitz and Pieces

Year 6 have had an exciting and productive fifth term! One of the standout moments was completing their SATs. The children approached each test with maturity and gave their very best – we were incredibly proud of their focus and effort. Alongside SATs, they have continued to show determination across the curriculum. In English, we explored Rose Blanche. The children wrote powerful third-person narratives following Rose’s journey through the forest and her discovery of a concentration camp. Their writing showcased vivid description, empathy and a strong grasp of the text’s themes. In history, as part of our Blitz and Pieces topic, we have been learning about life during the Second World War. The children examined key aspects such as the evacuation of children, the role of women and the impact of the Blitz, using a range of historical sources. These lessons have sparked thoughtful discussion and supported their understanding in English. Art lessons have been inspired by the work of Henry Moore. The children sketched dramatic Blitz scenes using line, tone and shading to convey atmosphere and emotion. Finally, the sunshine has brought PE lessons outdoors, where the children have enjoyed developing their cricket and tennis skills – improving their technique, teamwork and fielding abilities. Well done, Year 6!

Year 6 have had a fantastic and memorable final term! One of the highlights has been rehearsing for our end-of-year production I’m an 11 Year Old, Get Me Out of Here! The children have worked incredibly hard to learn their lines, perfect the songs and bring the show to life with energy and humour. In music, they’ve also composed their very own leaving song, carefully crafting lyrics, melodies and counter melodies to reflect their journey through primary school. PE lessons have focused on athletics, with pupils building stamina, speed and technique across a range of track and field activities. In French, we’ve been learning how to talk about food and drink, with pupils practising vocabulary and conversational phrases. Without doubt, the biggest highlight of the term was our action- packed residential to Okehampton. Over five days, the children challenged themselves with high ropes, abseiling, rock climbing, gorge scrambling, kayaking, canoeing and cycling – showing resilience, bravery and brilliant teamwork throughout. What a way to end the year! Well done, Year 6! Have a fantastic summer – thank you for your support this year.
