Autumn Learning: 

Download: 2024-25 Year 3 – Term 1 and 2 – Banksy’s Bristol

Year 3 have had a great start to the year. This term has been a particularly creative one as we have been learning all about Banksy. We have been looking at his street art and creating out our sketches and prints in his style. We even got a chance to participate in a street art workshop recently, where we tagged our names on to spray-painted vinyls. We have been looking at Bristol geography specifically at the differences between physical and human geography in our city and writing about the Bristol Balloon Fiesta in English. In PE we have enjoyed learning new skills in gymnastics and football and finished the term off with house group tournaments in our classes. As it is currently Black History month, we have been learning more about the importance of why we celebrate this time of year and learning about different people who have made a difference to the way the world is today such as Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King and Harriet Tubman. Science has been an enLIGHTening one as we have been learning about how light travels, light sources and how shadows are formed. We loved experimenting with shadows recently. It has been a great start to the year and we are looking forward to learning more about Bristol next term.

What a busy term Year Three have had! Children have worked incredibly hard behind the scenes to learn a brand-new Christmas performance and oh wow – it was incredible! In science, children have been learning all about rocks and how to identify and classify them based on their appearance or properties. Children’s knowledge was put to the test when we carried out a rock survey around the school grounds. This term in PE, we have explored hockey and machines in dance focusing on the elements – a staff highlight being the dance inspired by a vending machine. Children have refined their sewing skills in DT, using the running stitch to join fabrics and create a finger puppet of Brunel inspired by famous puppeteer Barry Smith. English went intergalactic with children writing a sequel to the narrative of Beegu. We then got into the shoes of our furry, yellow friend, trying alien fruit and writing an informal letter from the perspective of Beegu. In RE, children have learned about different religions and their beliefs in God.

Spring Learning: 

Download: 2024-25 Year 3 – Term 3 and 4 – Time Travellers

This term, Year 3 has been engaged in an exciting and diverse range of topics!

In English, we developed our writing skills by creating non-chronological reports about woolly mammoths, followed by instructional writing inspired by How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth. In Maths, we focused on measurement—exploring length, mass, and capacity—before moving on to fractions. Science lessons were hands-on and engaging, as we explored soil layers through a fun, edible activity and learned about fossilisation by making our own fossil replicas. In History, we traveled back to the Stone Age, comparing it to modern life and tracing the transition to the Bronze Age.

Our creativity flourished in Art, where we studied storytelling in cave paintings and designed our own charcoal sketches on a wash background. Music lessons had us composing and performing Viking battle songs with discipline and teamwork. In PE, we honed our teamwork and orienteering skills and performed a dance inspired by a seaside theme park visit. RE lessons deepened our understanding of Jewish festivals and family traditions, highlighted by a memorable visit to a local synagogue. In French, we learned to describe school items and express opinions on different subjects. PSHE encouraged us to reflect on our dreams and goals while building resilience and overcoming challenges. Finally, in Computing, we brought our ideas to life by creating animations using Scratch.

In English, we journeyed back to the Stone Age and wrote diary entries imagining a day in the life of a prehistoric person. We also crafted a narrative based on The Journey, where our creativity truly shone. In Maths, we’ve been super busy learning how to tell the time, exploring shapes, and even creating our own 3D models using marshmallows! We also worked with statistics, collecting data and turning it into bar models. In Science, we explored the fascinating world of human and animal skeletons and investigated the nutritional value of different food groups. In Geography, we delved into the world of OS and digital maps, learning to explore co-ordinates, symbols, and identifying human and physical features in Bristol. Our Design and Technology lessons have been great fun, where we designed and created our own cereal boxes using 3D nets, which linked well with our PSHE lessons on maintaining a healthy lifestyle. In Music, we discovered the music used to celebrate Chinese New Year, and we created and performed our own pentatonic melodies, putting our musical skills to the test. In PE, we’ve been learning various balances and creating our own gymnastic sequences, followed by two weeks of swimming, which has been a fantastic experience for all. In RE, we explored the significance of festivals and why they are important to religious communities around the world. In French, we’ve been learning vocabulary to talk about the sports and activities we like and dislike. Finally, in Computing, we’ve been mastering the art of collecting data and creating branching databases.

Download: 2024-25 Year 3 Term 5 – Hail Ceasar!

This term, Year 3 have been focussing on the topic of ‘Hail Caesar!’ where they have been learning all about the Romans. History lessons took them on a journey through time, learning all about the different emperors and even battle strategies. The children learned how to play rounders and how to compete in different athletics events all in preparation for Sports Day which took place in the final week and had some incredibly close races.

In DT, Year 3 designed and made their own interactive greetings cards and in science,  conducted an experiment to find out if they could change the colour of plants through transpiration. In French lessons, they all learnt how to say where they live and created some amazing sentences doing so. Music lessons saw the children creating their own ragtime style song using scat singing when learning all about jazz music. The children also created their own free verse poems and even wrote a letter to the emperor of Rome to try and persuade him to set all the animals free from the Colosseum – they came up with some incredibly powerful arguments to persuade him. In Maths, the children learnt all about multiplication and used a new method to work out the answer to division questions. They have also dived into the world of fractions and learning how to order, add and subtract them. It has been an amazing term and we all can’t wait to see what term 6 brings!

Download: 2024-25 Year 3 Term 6 – Iron Man

What a fantastic term it has been! This term has been packed with exciting learning opportunities and memorable experiences. In English, the children became journalists, writing and publishing their own newspaper articles inspired by The Iron Man. They also crafted thrilling narratives based on the dramatic final challenge in the story. In Maths, we revisited a range of key skills from across Year 3 and put them to the test through a real-life challenge – planning a holiday within a set budget. Our reading journey took us deep into the world of The Iron Man, alongside a variety of other engaging texts, including comics, which the children thoroughly enjoyed. PE lessons have been full of energy, with time spent outdoors developing tennis skills in the spirit of Wimbledon and preparing for our mini athletics Sport’s Day. In Geography, we carried out a local investigation centred around Kingswood Park, while in Art, the children enhanced their sketching techniques and created their own versions of the Mona Lisa. French lessons have been full of enthusiasm, and the children are now confidently ready to visit France and order a meal in French! In Computing, we explored programming, learning how to test and debug code. Our Music lessons took us on a journey to India, where we discovered the beauty and rhythm of traditional Indian music. Science has been filled with hands-on learning as we explored the concepts of friction and magnetic forces. Meanwhile, in RE, we delved into sacred texts from a variety of world religions, deepening our understanding of different beliefs and cultures. It has been a rich and rewarding term, and the children should be incredibly proud of all they have achieved!
