Thursday – PE kit to be worn to school
Friday – all homework set as follows and due to be completed by the following Friday: spelling task on Google Classroom; Spag.com activity; Mathletics activity. Weekly spelling test takes place and new spellings issued for learning at home. Reading records required in school, with children having read a minimum of 5 times.
Learning
Autumn Learning:
Our first term in Year 5 has been out of this world! Our topic, Reach for the Stars, has been all about space and the solar system. To launch the topic, we made rockets and launched them. Some went high up in the sky and some didn’t quite have enough thrust to even lift off! In Science, we have learnt about day and night and the phases of the moon, by eating Oreos. We wrote a persuasive letter to Mr Thomas, asking him to allow us to go and stay at NASA Space Camp. We are still waiting for his decision! We have created a self-portraits in the style of some famous artists. To end our topic, we went inside the space dome and explored the Solar System. We saw constellations and a black hole. The children have settled in brilliantly to Year 5 and we are looking forward to sharing their learning journey with them this year.
Our topic this term was Defenders of Britain and we have been learning about the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons. We launched our topic by making our own Viking bread, which some of us liked more than others – some even chose to make it at home! In English, we became skalds and wrote our own brilliant Viking sagas. The children also created their own Viking poetry, including the popular Viking poem form, a Kenning. In maths, we have been learning about fractions, decimals and percentages and how these link together. We have also been planning, creating and editing our own videos in computing. For DT, we enjoyed making pulley systems and exploring cogs. Lastly, we can’t forget to mention the beautiful carol concert that Year 5 and 6 performed this year – it was a magical evening! We hope the children have a restful and happy Christmas, ready to return to their learning in 2023.
Spring Learning:
Admiral Benbow Inn was where term 3 started in Year 5 to launch our topic BR Buccaneers. The children experienced the atmosphere of the inn situated on the Bristol Channel. They read the first chapter of Treasure Island and wrote their own version. In music, the children listened to and appraised sea shanties and composed their own using graphic notation. As artists, Year 5 have been exploring the styles of different artists and have developed their own sketching techniques. You never know, we may have the next Dahli or Da Vinci. Geography has focused on Europe including identifying countries, capital cities, exports and imports.
Year 5 have had a very busy term. The children have been exploring microbits in computing and have started to develop their own programs. Year 5 have also learnt about inventors and their achievements such as Charles Macintosh and Stephanie Kwolek. The children looked at purses through the ages and used this to design and create their own coin purses in DT. They have been practising stitching, sewing buttons and adding interesting appliques. In outdoor PE, Year 5 have been working on their tennis skills, and they have been balancing, mirroring and matching for gymnastics. Year 5 were invited to a showing of Annie at John Cabot this term, which they really enjoyed. They were also visited by Reverend Beverley Charles, who gave a talk about how the church is eco-friendly. It was so interesting to learn about all the different plants and animals that you can find in the churchyard.
