Autumn Learning: 

Download: 2024-25 Year 1 – Term 1 – All Around Kingswood

The children have settled brilliantly into Year 1. The children have been busy learning about the local area in their Geography lessons. We had a great time visiting the local library and park! In History, the children have been learning about Beacon Rise and significant events in the past. The children have also designed and created playground equipment in D&T. 

Our writing this term has been based on the stories ‘Whatever Next’ and ‘Aliens Love Underpants’. The children have been busy writing narratives and recounts using full stops, capital letters, adjectives and conjunctions! We even jumped into the story and had a lovely picnic on the moon with Baby Bear. 

In maths, the children are learning to be ‘masters of number’. We have been using number facts to describe the place value of numbers and solve addition problems.

This term, Year 1 have enjoyed learning about the four seasons in their science and geography lessons. The children enjoyed using their weather station to observe and investigate changes in weather. In English the children have been brilliant at using adjectives with the ‘er’ and ‘est’ suffix. They have been busy writing diary entries based on the story ‘The Robot and the Bluebird’ and poems about winter. They have also written a set of instructions based on the delicious Christmas cookies they made in school. In maths, the children have been developing their calculation skills and 3D shape knowledge. Last but not least, the children have worked hard and to collaboratively perform the show ‘Angel Express’. It was brilliant! We are extremely proud of their singing, confidence and resilience during rehearsals.

Download: 2024-25 Year 1 – Term 3 – Pirates

This term has been an exciting adventure as we’ve immersed ourselves in the thrilling world of pirates! In English, we’ve been using our creative writing skills to craft persuasive letters, each one trying to convince a pirate captain to let us join their legendary crew. Watch out—there might be a few aspiring pirates among us, ready to set sail on the high seas! Alongside this, in our Music lessons, we’ve been learning traditional sea shanties, the raucous and rhythmic songs that sailors used to sing to keep in time while working aboard ships. These catchy tunes have really brought the spirit of pirate life to life!

In Design and Technology (DT), we took our pirate theme to the next level by designing and creating our very own pirate flags. We channeled our inner artists, using bold colors, symbols, and designs that would strike fear into the hearts of any pirate rival! Meanwhile, in Physical Education (PE), we’ve been working on our pirate skills by mapping out treasure hunts, using clues and physical challenges to navigate our way to hidden treasures. To top it off, in our Computing lessons, we’ve been learning to make our very own treasure maps—complete with secret codes and coordinates—so that we can track down hidden booty with expert precision. It’s been a term full of exploration, creativity, and a lot of pirate fun! Who knows, maybe we’ll even find buried treasure along the way!

This term our topic was plants and we have been surveying the types of plants we have at Beacon Rise. We then took this inspiration and even grew our cress and runner beans which are now part of the Beacon Rise garden! We also had a closer look at plants by dissecting them and labeling the physical parts. We have also had tadpoles in Year 1 to look after. In Maths, we have learnt about capacity and volume.

Download: 2024-25 Year 1 Term 5 – Sun Sea and Sand

Term 5

This term, Year 1 have been diving into the sunny world of Sun, Sea and Sand! From sandy shores to seaside songs, the children have had a brilliant time exploring this exciting topic across all their subjects. In English, they took a trip to the beach through their imaginations! They’ve been busy writing colourful postcards, sharing seadside adventures while using proper nouns and question marks. In maths, it’s been all about time! The children have been learning to tell the time and have enjoyed timing activities and exploring clocks – perfect from planning a fun day at the beach! In geography, they have become explorers, discovering the human and physical features of coastal areas. They loved comparing the seaside town of Weston-super-Mare with our very own city, Bristol. It was fascinating to see the differences and similarities! Creativity has been shining brightly in Art and Music. Inspired by Picasso and cubism, the children created bold, expressive seaside portraits.

Download: 2024-25 Year 1 Term 6 – Animal Kingdom

Term 6

The Year 1 topic this term has been ‘Animal Kingdom’ and we have been learning all about animals and animal groups in science. In D&T we have been busy making safari jeeps with wheels and axle mechanisms! To celebrate our learning, the children had a wonderful trip to Noah’s Ark Farm. It was a great day and we loved the meerkats! The children also enjoyed visiting the Church of the Ascension as part of their R.E. Learning – they have been learning about places of worship. In maths, the children have been busy making links in their learning and recalling appropriate strategies to solve a range of problems. We are very impressed with how their arithmetic skills have progressed over the year. In English, the children have been writing recounts based on the story Handa’s Suprise.
