Year 4 have had a wonderful term studying the Ancient Egyptians in their “Horrible Histories” topic! We have learned all about the gruesome subject of mummification and even had a go at mummifying our own pharaohs (well – oranges!!). We studied the boy pharaoh, Tutankhamun, and learned all about how his tomb was discovered in The Valley of the Kings. In English, we wrote our own Egyptian escape narratives and even became newspaper reporters to break the news of King Tut’s tomb being discovered! We will be finishing our topic by creating our own documentary to share our knowledge on the Ancient Egyptians. In PE, we have enjoyed creating our own gymnastic sequence and playing the fast-paced sport of netball.

Year 4 had an exciting term 2! They learnt about conductors and insulators in science and even had the opportunity to build their own circuits. In PE, they created movements to a narrative and told the story of a mad professor through nothing but facial expressions and actions. In English, they wrote their own stories that aligned with the class book, The Wild Robot, and they have been learning to create their own podcasts in computing. Finally, one of the big highlights of this term was definitely the carol performance at the Holy Trinity Church. It was such a success and everyone had so much fun!

Spring Learning: 

Download: Term 3 and 4 – Movie Madness

Year 4 have really enjoyed their first term of “Movie Mayhem”. We watched Toy Story (purely for educational purposes we can assure you!) and then wrote some incredible reviews of the film. We then wrote our own script for an additional scene in the film too! We have enjoyed learning all about the UK in geography. We have paid particular attention to Scotland and its mountainous terrain and lochs. Our music topic has focused on the musicality of rivers and lots of technical language and features. We have also created our own balloon stories in dance, moving gracefully in the wind before some powerful pops!

As part of our Movie Mayhem topic, we went to the cinema to watch ‘Migration’ and were lucky enough to have the entire cinema all to ourselves! We have been creating our own movie award sculptures in art and writing about films in English as well. In science, Year 4 have learnt all about the anatomy of the body and watched Mr Keat give a very gruesome and accurate demonstration of the digestive system. Yuk! Another big highlight has been creating compositions in music to celebrate Hanami (a Japanese traditional custom of enjoying cherry blossoms).

Summer Learning: 

Download: Term 5 and 6 – Running Wild

This term we have been learning about lots of different South American percussion instruments in music and created our own syncopated rhythms while exploring the genre of samba. In English, we wrote non-chronological reports that were full of facts about animals and focussed hard on making our writing cohesive and legible. In addition to this, we have been influenced by Alma Thomas and her abstract art and created our own colour wheels using stamps and paints. One of the highlights was definitely when we cooked pizza wraps in DT to finish off our healthy food unit.

Year 4 have had a fantastic term six! We have had lots of fun learning about cricket and athletics in PE. In English, we wrote a narrative based on the novel we have read ‘Mouse Bird Snake Wolf’. In this narrative, we had the opportunity to show off all the amazing skills that we have been learning throughout the year. In geography, we have been carrying out the role as geographers and have completed a fieldwork process to find out how we are sustainable at Beacon Rise! Another highlight was creating our own greenhouses in DT; we even had the chance to use glue guns and saws!
