The children have been brilliant adapting to Year 1 and have settled in well in Avon building. This term has been really busy and we have learnt all about the school. In our history lessons, Mr Thomas shared old photographs of the school and talked about the fire. In DT, the children became designers and creators.  They designed and built new playgrounds for some aliens. Our PE lessons have focussed on ball skills, and the children have learnt different ways of throwing a ball. To end our first topic, we had alien day! The children looked fabulous in their costumes; we completed lots of different activities during the day – great fun was had by all!

Year 1 had an amazing term 2. We have been learning lots about the weather, different seasons and how they affect us as part of our topic “Our Wonderful World”. We have enjoyed learning to divide in Maths, write instructions and making biscuits in English and deepening our Science and Geography knowledge with all things about the globe. We learnt about Andy Goldsworthy in Art. We also had celebrations such as Children in Need, where we dressed up and completed challenges with “bearpees”. We also got very Christmassy with our awesome Christmas Play where we aced our lines and singing!

Spring Learning: 

Download: Term 3 – Pirates of Beacon Rise

We have learned all about shapes and money in maths, narratives and persuasive letters in English, and we learned lots of alternative pronunciations in phonics to help with our reading. This term we focused on pirates! We learnt about Blackbeard and Anne Bonny in History and sewed our own pirate flags in DT. In science, we learned about different materials and their properties. We conducted experiments to find out which materials would float and which are the most reflective. In PSHE, we focused on challenges and how best to overcome them, and in PE we learned about trails, how to follow them and how to give directions. To round up our learning we had a perfect Pirate Day! We completed a treasure hunt with the year 5s and even got to listen to a shanty band in the afternoon.

Download: Term 4 – The Enchanted Forest

We had great fun with lots of our learning being inspired by fairytales. In English, we read the story of Jack and the Beanstalk and wrote our own version using lots of exclamation marks!!!!!!! In Science, we have learnt about the parts of plants and what they need to grow. We planted our own beans but Jack’s magic hasn’t made  them grow as quick as the beanstalk.  In Music, we took the story of The Three Little Pigs and we used our voices and instruments to represent different characters. We listened to the composition called Peter and the Wolf and listened to how the composer used an instrument to portray each character. We explored the painting technique of pointillism inspired by Georges Seurat and Chris Ofili. We created our own sunflower painting using this dot technique. The children learnt the five ways to keep our body healthy and how to look after ourselves when they feel poorly. In geography, we learnt all about the world, first focussing on where the UK is located on the map and that it is made up of four countries. The expanding to learning about the seven continents and five oceans.

Summer Learning: 

Download: Term 5 – The Wild Place 

Our biggest highlight this term has been our school trip where we went to Noah’s Ark Zoo. We saw so many animals and had such a brilliant day. We then used our knowledge of the trip to write a recount in English using time conjunctions. We also recalled the route we took in Geography. We also read the story of Handa’s Surprise where we looked at re-writing the story for ourselves. We did some Science work learning about animals and senses – we had to use our taste to check which was salt and sugar, yuck! In Maths, we have been looking at the 5 times tables and place value. We made our Safari jeeps in DT and evaluated how it went. We looked at balancing in PE and pitches in Music. Finally, we looked at using a laptop in Computing.

Download: Term 6 – Sun, Sea and Sand

In English, the children produced a persuasive poster to encourage people to look after our oceans. Then, children wrote postcards to the reception children thinking about past tense. In maths, we have looked at money, measuring and also shapes!  We have visited the Church of the Ascension to end our RE topic about Sacred Places. Here, the children were greeted by Reverend Beverley and learnt about the main features inside the church. In PE, children have continued to learn about athletics and developing good running techniques. They have also used apparatus in gymnastics and completed sequences with their partners. We were lucky enough to have a steel drum visit us. The children experienced playing a steel drum and performing in a group! In history, the children learnt about the seaside now and then, and were able to compare seaside holidays from a long time ago to now. In art, children learnt about cubism and studied the famous artist Pablo Picasso. They produced some excellent self portraits!
