Curriculum Intent and Progression

At Beacon Rise we continuously strive to provide a broad and balanced curriculum that is coherently sequenced, engaging and inclusive. In 2021, pupils, staff and families have decided that the following values should underpin our curriculum and lead our pupil learning.  The first four values have been identified as requiring particular focus in our learning provision, as we feel these are the specific areas most beneficial to the current needs of our pupils.   They will be incorporated widely, both implicitly and explicitly, within our planning.

Also at the heart of our curriculum is the promotion of British values which we believe is an essential element of pupils’ understanding and preparation for later life in modern Britain. These values include:

  • An understanding and appreciation of a wide range of cultures;
  • Democracy, liberty and rule of law;
  • Respect, understanding and tolerance for all faiths, races, beliefs and cultural diversity; and
  • Willingness to participate in and respond positively to different opportunities.

All curriculum areas are planned to answer the requirements of the National Curriculum and to provide a challenging, broad and balanced education. There are three core subjects: English, Maths and Science. In addition, there are foundation subjects which include: Computing, History, Geography, Art and Design, Languages, Music and Physical Education. Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) is also taught at every Key Stage, and Relationships and Sex Education is mainly taught as part of the PSHE curriculum. Religious Education (RE) is also part of our curriculum and taught at every Key Stage. Our curriculum is designed, where possible, using a cross-curricular approach as this enables pupils to make connections across their learning and deepen their understanding and experiences. Through this approach, pupils can also apply their reading, writing and mathematical skills across the whole curriculum. 

Topics are brought to life through exciting enrichment opportunities including trips, events and visitors which are opportunities for the children to immerse themselves in the topic and appreciate human creativity and achievement.  In addition, we work in partnership with other schools, external agencies and the local community to extend the range and quality of learning experiences for our pupils.

Accessible Curriculum for All

Provision is made in the Education Reform Act 1988 for a formal complaints procedure. A copy of the complaints procedure and policy can be obtained from the school office by anyone wishing to make a complaint about the curriculum, Religious Education or Collective Worship. Parents wishing to withdraw their children from all or part of the Religious Education programme, Collective Worship or Sex Education classes should contact the Principal.  Pupils who are withdrawn remain supervised in school. The school respects the legal right of any parent to withdraw his/her child from lessons with regard to Religious Education and Sex Education.
