Autumn Learning:

Year 2 have had a fantastic first term! We have thoroughly enjoyed our “Pole to Pole” topic so far. We have started local, looking at the geography of Kingswood – especially our school and the famous beacon! Our PE explored maypole dancing and throwing skills. Our writing has focused on a variety of autumn animals. Starting with a narrative based on the story “Pumpkin Soup” before moving on to writing our own non-chronological reports about an autumn animal. Our final writing topic was looking at a variety of autumnal poems. In science we’ve explored animal’s habitats and what they need from them We are really looking forward to term 2 – moving away from the maypole of Hanham to look at the much colder North and South Poles!

Year 2 have had a fantastic conclusion to their “Maypole to North Pole” topic. We have loved our geography, even going on a trip to our world-famous Hanham Mount! We enjoyed learning about its significance and about the history of the site – so exciting that it’s so close to our school! We have produced some amazing pieces of writing this term around the story of “The Winter’s Child” including a newspaper article and our own made up narratives. Following our CreateBR days last term, we finally managed to get Scarlett Oak Theatre company in to perform their excellent “Zoo that comes to you” show. We had so much fun and learned so much about what we can do to protect endangered species. We’re so excited for next term’s topic of “Shoot to the moon!” all about space.
Spring Learning:

This term’s topic was out of this world! We ventured into outer space learning the names of the planets and placed key events onto a timeline. We learnt about the space race between the USA and USSR. We took part in space day and came to school dressed as aliens, astronauts and even a spaceship! We learnt a space rap, made a plane and even ate food just like the astronauts would in space. In English, we have written a recount of space day and a narrative based on the story, The Way Back Home. In Music, we composed our music using glockenspiels and a group composition using different instruments. We explored timbre and how changing the dynamics alters the mood of a piece of music. Our Science learning has been all about plants finding out what they need to grow. We have been learning about how to programme the bee bots and create algorithms in Computing. In PE, we have created our own sequences in gymnastics and developed our batting skills. In Art, we explored tints and tones and painted a colour wheel containing primary and secondary colours building up to our final masterpieces based on the pioneering space artwork of Chesley Bonestell . We are looking forward to our next topic, all about toys.

This term in Year 2 has been filled with fun and creativity as we explored our Toys topic. In English, we designed our very own superhero characters and featured them in adventure stories and advertisements. In PE, we choreographed a toy-themed marching dance, imagining the toys escaping from their packaging. Over in DT, we brought our characters to life by creating slider mechanism toys.
Science lessons focused on materials and their properties, where we investigated the best materials for making different toys and objects. This linked to our History lessons where we compared Victorian toys with the ones we enjoy today.
Outdoors in PE, we worked on our batting skills, gradually building up to a full game by the end of the term. In Computing, we applied our maths knowledge to create pictograms and tally charts using iPads. In RE, we explored a variety of spring celebrations from different religions, including Easter, Eid-al-Fitr and Passover.
It’s been a playful and exciting term of learning!
Summer Learning:

This term has been an exciting one as we explored the events of The Great Fire of London! The children have really engaged with the topic and have written imaginative stories and detailed diary entries all centred around this historic event. They’ve embraced their roles as budding historians, discovering key facts and learning about the significant figures of the time. In DT, they expanded on this knowledge by learning about the architect Christopher Wren and really enjoyed constructing their own 1666-style houses. In PE, we continued to work on our tennis skills, specifically practising our serves over the net and in computing, we used Chrome Music Lab to experiment with digital music creation. We will be wrapping up the term with a special Great Fire of London day, full of fun activities like treasure hunts, baking bread, and even recreating the fire by burning the houses they built!

Term 6
Year 2 have had a brilliant few weeks. Our trip to We The Curious was a highlight – the children loved getting stuck into all the hands-on science activities and were full of excitement all day. We also visited Holy Trinity Church, where we listened to a story from the Bible and produced images to match parts of the story. We got creative in DT as we designed our own colourful headbands and made delicious fruit kebabs. In Computing, the children have really impressed us by planning their algorithms using Scratch Junior. We’ve also been keeping active, learning some energetic samba dance moves and being wowed by a performance from the amazing 3D Dance Company. It’s been wonderful to see the children so engaged and enthusiastic. We’re really proud of the way they have behaved on our trips and all they’ve achieved in school. It’s been a fantastic year. Have a great Summer everyone.
